In my 2015 goal post I told you that we are looking to expand our family. If you have been with MOMentous Moms since the beginning you know that my husband and I had a VERY difficult time getting pregnant the first time around. We went as far as starting the IVF process with no success and then spontaneously getting pregnant with no help what so ever. It was a roller coaster to say the least. Well, we have decided that it is time to keep adding to the brood and see if we get a miracle a second time around. Now to preference this a little bit we have been what I call pseudo trying for almost a year now. What I mean is we are not preventing but we have not gone down the rabbit hole that true trying can be either. A CDC study found 10.9% (6.7 million) of women ages 15-44 have impaired ability to get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term. 1 in 6 couples are unable to conceive after 12 months of trying. So we were definitely not alone as much as it feels like it.
Because my hubby and I are massive planners we found out there were a couple things to check off the list before we were ready for number 2.
First up, we needed to get our finances in order. There is nothing in this world that will take away your money faster than another little human. They cost a ton before even arriving if we are being totally truthful. We have taken steps to figure out what we need to save and what new additions we will need to have once a baby comes. The best news is we already have a lot of stuff. No buying new swings, car seats, baby toys, that kind of stuff. We have it all from our daughter and everything is still new enough that it hasn’t expired (meaning the car seat). If we have a girl we get an even bigger bonus on savings for clothes. We also have 9 months to really save like squirrels if our wish comes true, so that’s good.
We have been looking into OTC options, something not easy to find. In fact when I was introduced to this amazing new product I discovered that The Stork OTC is the only conception assistance device cleared by the FDA for over-the-counter sales, without a prescription. What is The Stork OTC you may ask? Well, it is a device that uses an established, and effective conception technique—cervical cap insemination—, which helps with many common fertility difficulties. Check out the picture below you will get an idea. This means it is a wonderful first step before trying more costly, invasive procedures, hello budget mentioned above! Being that I am a control freak I also love that it puts us in control. I thought this was the coolest thing I had ever seen so if you want more information there is a twitter chat on Thursday, January 15 at 12 p.m. ET. They will also be giving away five $50 CVS/pharmacy gift cards. You can purchase The Stork OTC, it is now available online and in CVS/pharmacy stores or you can enter for a chance to win one below!
Then we decided since we are not getting pregnant by magic (as it seems for everyone else) maybe it is smart for me to go back on what we lovingly call “The Baby Diet”. This is something I hate with a passion but did and will do again willingly. It consists of no more alcohol :(, lessen the carbs, more fertility friendly fruits and veggies and the biggest one…no more caffeine! (Insert sound of horror here) We have found out that caffeine can be a contributing factor in miscarriages, so I will be weaning myself off of it slowly but surely. Pray for me, HA who am I kidding, pray for those around me.
There is another very important part of The Baby Diet, vitamins. Now in general if you eat a full and complete diet you should not need vitamins…blah blah blah. I do not eat a full and complete diet. I barely eat breakfast, half the time miss lunch and save all my food for dinner, which is not good. So I take vitamins. After doing TONS of research and speaking with my OBGYN, these are the vitamins I will be taking. A lot of nutrients can be taken care of by taking a prenatal vitamin, check. Next up Coenzyme Q10, to improve egg quality, Zinc to help the whole process and something you don’t normally find on a webpage, Royal Jelly (that is produced by bees, so big no-no if you allergic to bees!). To get a total explanation on what this is go here Royal Jelly. Basically this worked for us last time and so lets try it again.
Now for the mental aspect, when we were trying to conceive last time I became a veritable fountain of knowledge but with that also came stress. Lots of stress about why it wasn’t happening, obviously there was something wrong with me so why couldn’t I just accept that. The worst things you would never say to a person, I was saying to myself everyday. How crappy I was, what a failure I was, how I didn’t deserve a child. It was really bad for a while. Then I spoke with a therapist because I could not control my spiral. It really helped. She gave me the tools to deal with this very frustrating process. I was still frustrated but the second I stopped blaming/hating myself and realized it was out of my control and THAT was what I hated, I felt better. Then within two months we were expecting. So I am not going to go there this time. I refuse to go to that dark place as much as I might want to.
We will see what this crazy world has in store for us but hopefully it is to expand our little family by one more. Obviously I will let you know.
