Similac’s Viral Video- Helping or Hurting the Mommy Wars?

Similac's Viral Video - Does it Help or Hurt the Mommy WarsYou all have probably seen this video on Facebook, in fact we shared it on our page on Friday. The Mother ‘Hood Official Video. This was , which is a company best known for their baby formula. Here is what they said on their YouTube page:

“There’s something going down on the playground. Don’t they know that everyone has their own way of parenting? But when it comes down to it, we’re all on the same side. Help us put an end to the judgment by sharing this video with every parent you know. Join the conversation on ‪ #SisterhoodUnite”

The general theme of this video is very good. It really brings together different kinds of mothers and hopefully shows that no matter what kind of parent you choose to be we all have the best intentions for our children. It presents that we all have the same basic deep down desire for our kids to be safe and protected. This video was shared with our moms.

When asked about the general impression they thought it was cute and the end made the tear. They thought the general message was good. Then something started to creep into their minds.

Is this how the world sees each other? Are we really all so different that we can barely communicate without hate 99% of the time? Does the true spirit of this video help or hurt the mommy wars?

The general feeling then became that this could hurt some women. It could make them not want to share their beliefs, basically telling them to shut up and keep their opinions to themselves. While some might agree with this isn’t that the exact opposite of the videos purpose? We are supposed to help one another. It almost created a self conscious feeling among the mothers who viewed it.

A couple of us are VERY pro nursing. Does this mean that we hate on those who are not pro nursing or are unable to breastfeed? We didn’t think so but going by the video we are extremely pushy individuals.

Those of us who work must feel those who are SAHM’s do nothing all day but get mani and pedi’s. That is what the video shares. We all started to look at each other a bit differently. Silently wondering if that was true.

One of our mothers then brought up the point that these are caricatures of actual mothering subtypes. They are extremes and we as a society can get a little sensitive to things like this. A lot of mothers get offended very easily when someone tells us they do not agree with our parenting philosophy. Why? Because deep down we are all doing the best we can, making the best decisions for our children and there is nothing in this world more personal than that.

In the end we all could relate to more than one mommy subtype portrayed in the video. We are a mix of mama’s all just trying to do the best we can for our kids. Hopefully the video will open some eyes and make women start to realize that no matter what we choose, we are choosing what is best for our families and the health and safety of our children need to be put before our own judgements.

As long as this video is taken in the context in which it was intended then it is phenomenal and should be shared, #sisterhood.
