Continuing on with our introduction to Discovery Toys, an amazing internet sales toy company. They specialize in well made, gender neutral, interactive, EDUCATIONAL TOYS! That’s right, no worthless toys that are going to break after the first time your child plays with them. No toys that give nothing to your child except distraction, every time they play they will learn, whether they realize it or not.
One of the things that parents today are battling is the war between their children and screen time.
Too much screen time has been shown to decrease not only imagination but also the ability to concentrate, attention span, ability to communicate and their ability to read people’s emotions. It gives their still developing brains too much stimuli all at once. Their brains no longer have to exercise cognitive development, the tablet does it all for them. This can have a very detrimental effect on their proper mental and emotional development.
Around the age of 3-5 years old children tend to see a rise in screen time during their daily routines. This is because after the age of two it is perfectly fine, even encouraged for them to have about an hour of screen time a day. This way they learn how to use the technology and it can have positive effects, especially if the apps they are using are educational. However, when kids are stuck to screen for a long time, there can be damage done. Everything in moderation.
Technology has its place in our children’s world, just as it does in ours. However, it is more important they know how to exist without it. That they can play without the need for a screen. The toys on the list below allow them to do just that. Have fun without the screen.
I have broken it down into 3 & 4-year-olds but really any of these toys would be age appropriate for any child ages 3-5 and beyond.
Gift Guide for 3 Year Olds
Fold Away Kitchen – I am slightly obsessed with this cool toy. It is a pop-up kitchen for little aspiring chefs. My daughter has one of those intense wood kitchens that is stuck in a corner because it is well, huge. This is so cool because it can fold away! If you have company coming and need to room, no biggie! If you need to stock it with amazing food, there is a wonderful Farmer’s Market Set and a Salad Chef set, plus more. These durable, beautiful wooden toys will be a hit for years to come.
School House – Speaking if pop-up toys, those teepee tents are a huge trend right now and I love them. Giving your child a safe space to play that is just theirs is a wonderful idea. That is one reason I love this school house. It’s a little more on the expensive side but totally worth it. It also comes with 5 double sided cards with different topics on them such as letters, weather, numbers, geography and science. There is always something for them to learn. When they are done with it or you are, just fold it away. Comes with a carrying case. Oh, and did I mention that it is one of Dr. Toys Best Children’s Products 2016. Just sayin!
Express It! Buddy – This next toy is amazing and perfect if you are a teacher, psychologist, therapist, or (all of those) parent. It is a buddy that can help children learn facial features so they do not fall behind on that very important social skill. With the increasing use of technology, kids are having a more difficult time reading the people around them. This toy can not only help them learn facial features but makes it fun. They pick the correct expressions buddy needs to make when angry, sad, or happy. This can also help children when they are unsure of how to express themselves. Between the ages of 3-5 children are learning to deal with their emotions and how to control them. Buddy can help with that.
Gift Guide for 4-5 Year olds
Stacking Owls – Okay this is my FAVORITE! My 3 1/2-year-old is in love with these friendly owls. They are very cool because they provide a challenge while still being SO much fun. These beautiful wooden owls can be stacked in hundreds of different ways. Balance beams are included for extra fun. They all have numbers on the back and so can also be put in sequential order and used to learn math. Hours of fun I guarantee!!!
Motor Works – I have a nephew who loves taking things apart to see how they work. He is slightly obsessed with it. While it is fun and interesting to watch, we don’t always want the remote taken apart. Enter Motor Works. With this set, you get three different vehicles, a race car, prop plane, and motorcycle. Plus, a working drill and screwdriver. The child can take each apart and put them back together. Plus a bonus for you, mom and dad, all of the piece come in a wonderful carrying case. They have also added new pieces you can add on, Motor Works Train and Dino Works T-Rex.
AB Seas – Around the age of 3-4 kids start learning about playing board games. While to a lot of parents board games might be going the way of the dinosaur they are the best tools for multiple learning skills you cannot find elsewhere. It teaches taking turns, interacting with other players and winning and losing. This game is about matching upper and lower case letters with a fun ocean theme. It also comes with Spanish and French letters for multi-lingual fun.
As I mentioned before these toys are age appropriate for kids 3 and above and are welcome additions to any home. I hope that you take a look at these this holiday season and give your kids the gift of education!
