Seasonal Fruits & Vegetables: Winter

Have you ever gone to the grocery store thinking, “I could really go for some Strawberries today.” Only to get there and the strawberries are $6.99 for a pint! Out of season produce can be killer on the bank account.  I wanted to share some of the knowledge I have absorbed in learning to stay in budget. Here is a list some of the best, winter fruits and vegetables.
After all, tis the season.

Winter is December, January, and February. Here is a list of some of the best, seasonal veggies for Winter.

  • Beets
  • Belgian Endive
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Butternut Squash
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Collard Greens
  • Delicata Squash
  • Fennel
  • Kale
  • Leeks
  • Onions
  • Parsnips
  • Radicchio
  • Rutabagas
  • Shallots
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Turnips
  • Winter Squash

Some of these might seem a little bit intimidating. They were for me when I first learned of them. Vegetables such as beets, parsnips and turnips, root vegetables, are not staples in my diet. I have slowly found ways to cook with them. Ironically, my 8-month-old is obsessed with beets when I boil and puree them.

Now onto something sweeter. This is the prime time for the following fruits.

  • Blood Oranges
  • Cactus Pear
  • Clementines
  • Cranberries
  • Date Plums
  • Dates
  • Grapefruit
  • Kiwi
  • Kumquat
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Mandarin Oranges
  • Papaya
  • Oranges
  • Passion Fruit
  • Pears
  • Persimmons
  • Pomegranate
  • Pummelo
  • Red Currants
  • Tangerines

Where you surprised that citrus was the main fruit available during the winter? I was. For some reason when I think of oranges, I think of sunshine. Maybe it’s from living in Florida for so long. One of my favorite fruits on this list, blood orange. They are so beautiful and so tasty. I love getting a big bag and juicing them to mix up our orange juice routine.

Something I have learned in my strive to stay within a very strict budget with our groceries is that the season in which you buy produce matters. The price can change by the week. It can change by more than just a few cents. We are talking dollars. The quality is also different depending on the season. This is because when a fruit or vegetable is out of season they tend to be shipped in. The best case scenario is from out of state. The worst is out of the country. The environment is another reason to consider eating in season. This is you doing your small part for our planet and your family.
Here is a free printable of the best, seasonal fruits and vegetables for Winter. Head out to your local farmers market or grocery store, save some money, expand your families palate, and help the planet. Sounds like a win, win to me.

  1. Pomegranates are my favorite thing ever. I’m so sad I can’t get them anymore. I totally have paid insane amounts for strawberries just because I need fruit and everything else was intimidating. Great list.

    1. Me too! It is crazy how much the produce price goes up certain times of the year.

  2. So great of you to share this list! I am always about saving on shopping. Even if my favourite fruits or vegetables are not in season, the ones listed here are just as delicious.

    1. I agree! I also love finding new seasonal recipes to try some of the fruits and veggies that seem a little bit more intimidating or that I am less familiar with.

THis is a great list to use as a reminder of what’s easy to get right now. I tend to always crave pomegranates when they are not in season.

    1. Isn’t it funny how we tend to crave things not in season? I am exactly the same way. I LOVE blood oranges and they become impossible to find after their season.

  4. We live in the Midwest and pretty much all fruits and veggies are super overprices all year long!!

    1. Oh no! I would be devastated without my farmers market. I love it so much. I am so sorry to hear that.

  5. We shop seasonally, too. We figure that it is the best flavor for the money and usually they are cheaper, since there is so much of it!

    1. Exactly! It is one of the best ways I have found to keep our growing grocery budget in check.
