Spring Cleaning – 5 things you Never thought to Clean

It is quickly coming up on that time of year again. The one where your house is opening up and it is time for spring cleaning. Time to clean, clean, clean! Now if you are anything like me chances are that you keep your home pretty clean on a regular basis. You have weekly chores like clean the bathrooms, the floors, laundry, dishes etc. That is great but there are times your house needs a deeper clean, right! I chose to do it at the beginning of spring and the beginning of fall.

As big of a pain as it can be there are plenty of pluses to cleaning away. If you have a baby you need to make sure things are clean, truly clean. Their little systems are so sensitive to dust and allergens. If you find that your family is getting sick more often than usual the dirt and dust around the house could be to blame. Your body might be working harder to filter out the yuck. In the end, it is healthier for the entire family.

Here are just a couple of places you may not think about cleaning on the regular but desperately need a refresher now and then.

  • How long as it been since you changed out those air filters? Clean the grates while you are at it. If you want a REALLY deep clean consider hiring a company to come in a clean the ducts.
  • Think about your food. How long has it been since tackling that fridge? Sure you may clean the food particles you see on a daily basis but what about the coils or grates on the bottom. What about the top of it? Mine is notorious for harboring dust. Take out the drawers and make sure they sparkle.
  • Where you sleep can be particularly bad. Every night you lie your head on pillows that may not have been washed in years, if ever. Yes, you can absolutely wash pillows! Get duvets and comforters dry cleaned. While you are at it make sure you clean that mattress. Vacuum it and flip if it is a flip-able mattress. Your back will thank you.
  • Tackle that bathroom. Now I am not talking about cleaning the sinks and toilets, although that should be done too. I am talking about things like under the sinks, in the drawers, and of course, the bathmats! You need to wash those on the regular. They get wet every day. Even though they dry mold can still grow.
  • The playroom. I never knew kids toys could get so gross. Between the dirt, dust and sticky stuff that magically ends up on every toy, the inside can be gross too! You need to remember to check any toys which have squeaky holes. Water gets in there and those toys are done. Mold LOVES the inside of those. Change them regularly. If you child loves a particular toy, consider closing the hole with super glue. Launder the plushies at least once a month.
  • What about your cleaning tools themselves? Sure you empty the vacuum but there is more to it. How often do you scrub that vacuum? What about changing the filter? The first time I saw my husband vacuuming our vacuum I thought he lost his mind but it makes sense. It needs cleaning too.

Bacteria grows in some odd places. In the end, it is healthier for the entire family.

Execution is Key!

If you have never done a full house cleaning it can seem like quite a chore. Don’t let this thought discourage you. With a little bit of planning it can be a breeze. Today I will share with you the secret planning sheet that I use every Fall and Spring to make sure I get every nook and cranny. Feel free to print it out and download here!

Talking time, I prefer to take a week a do it all but not everyone has that kind of time. When we are in cleaning mode that is what we do with all of our free time. For me, it is best to tackle it all at once. Get it over with and start the Spring off with a fresh clean house.

I never think to clean my windowsills. I don’t know why, but once I remember it’s like YUCK! Thanks for the awesome checklist.

  2. So I always think to clean those places, but never actually make the time to do so. Except the air filters…our thermostat let’s us know when it’s time, and I also vacuum the vent at least once a week since our return is in the hallway. I do want to hire someone to clean inside all the vents though!

    1. That is awesome! I was talking with some girlfriends and most of them were saying they had never thought of it OR like you (and me), think of it but never find the time!

  3. I can’t believe I never thought to wash our pillows. Excuse me while I run upstairs asap!

    1. LOL By the time that entered my mind I just threw mine away! I swear I had the same pillow from when I was like 15!

  4. Really smart reminders about what we normally DONT clean. I need to tackle those bath mats today. Ick. And although I do the fridge clean-out here and there, I should do more of a MAJOR cleaning for it soon. Like, this weekend.

    1. It is the double-edged sword of I love it when everything is clean…but I hate getting there. LOL

  5. This is an awesome list. I am about to start my spring cleaning so it will come in handy. Baseboards and window sills are my least favorite and most forgotten areas.

    1. Me too! Wait I take that back, I actually hate dusting walls and fans. I feel like the dust gets into EVERYTHING. Then no one is allowed back into the room until the entire room is done.

  6. Haha, I do often clean my cleaning tools, but I always think of Monica from friends using her little vacuum attachment to vacuum her vacuum!

    1. LOL ME TOO! The first time I saw that scene I was watching it with my husband and I started laughing so hard I was crying! I call him Monica when he really gets into deep cleaning mode with our vacuum 🙂

  7. Yes, kids toys can get very gross. You’d be surprised what happens when your kids forget to wash their hands one time after eating. All of the crumbs can turn the playroom into the perfect place for bugs when the weather gets warm!

    1. It’s crazy how fast things like that accumulate. I feel like I could deep clean the girl’s toys every week and there would still be grossness all over the place.

  8. I wash my bathmats twice and then I buy new ones. The rubber backing doesn’t seem to grip as well after a few washings. These are great tips!

    1. After the second or third wash, I put down one of those rubber mats on the floor underneath the soft mat. I have to say though after the like 10th wash the mats are always fraying and totally not soft anymore, ready for replacement!

  9. Debra

I really do love spring cleaning – it makes me happy to pull things out and clean them!

    1. I LOVE it to no end when it’s done. LOL I do however love taking things out and organizing them! I could do that all day. Cleaning is ehh 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

  10. What a thorough list! Definitely never ever thought to vaccum the vaccum before!

    1. Thank you so much. Be careful, according to my husband it can get addicting because they are never fully clean!

  11. Mandy Carter

Great list t ouse as a reminder. My dad was always a stickler for air vents when I was a child. so I definitely never skip those.

    1. Thank you! I agree the air vents effect everything else so that is a very good one to stay on top of.

  12. Oh yes, washing pillows is such a good idea! And once you start with that you indeed find so many things you should actually give a good clean too! Love this list!

    1. Thank you! I agree the list can very quickly become never ending!

  13. I hate cleaning my windowsills as much as the baseboards but I must….during spring cleaning. HA. I love your lists, they’ll fit perfectly in my planner.

    1. I am so glad to hear they will work for you planner! I personally have a huge binder full of lists like this. Maybe you will find others you can use too 🙂

  14. Reesa Lewandowski

Wow you thought of every nook & cranny, thank you! I am the worst cleaner ever!!!! I am going to print this out and get to cleaning!!

    1. I’m glad my OCD about lists and cleaning can help you. 🙂 Every year I print one of these lists out and we check off as we go. That way it’s done and no one repeats anything, wouldn’t that suck!

  15. Krystle Cook

It is such a great reminder that even though we clean we need to clean the tools that we use too. I am loving your lists!

    1. Thank you so much! I am so glad I started making them. I do it all the time anyway I figured time to share it with all of you!

  16. Spring cleaning is definitely when I do the bathrooms really good! I get down to cleaning the sink drains and I HATE doing that! lol

    1. Eeww I don’t think anyone likes doing that. I have to say bathrooms are my LEAST favorite room to clean in the house! Thanks for stopping by!

  17. Lydia

One of the perks (or cons?) of having an all white bed is that I have to clean it every week or every other week. I can definitely notice when it gets dirty. And I LOVE having a clean fridge

    1. Don’t you just love it when you open the fridge and it seems clean and sparkly. I have to say I totally agree with you. We used to have a white bed, then we had kids and thought we will go back once they are over 5 🙂

  18. Switching out the old air filters is definitely one of those home maintenance things you don’t want to forget! I try to stay on top of that. Great tips!

    1. Thank you. Air quality is one of the most important things for your health that a lot of people forget.

  19. This is a great spring cleaning list! A few of these I wouldn’t have even thought of!

    1. I would never remember half of these if I didn’t keep this list. The only problem is I tend to find new things to add each year. Booo! I vote for self-cleaning houses!

  20. You are so right! THere are so many areas that can go untouched and are super important to clean. Thank for the list. THis will keep me busy during spring cleaning.

  21. This may sound a bit odd, but I also recommend that you vacuum the air. I notice that as I move things around or even push the vacuum forward, some dust escapes into the air and will settle long after you have finished vacuuming. For this reason, I like to just run the vacuum as I move it through the air randomly and it is amazing that you find you have collected dust particles after some time.

    1. That doesn’t sound odd at all. In fact I wish there was a better product that could filter the air right after cleaning. I cannot stand to walk into a room I just finished and see dust particles back on the dressers or countertops. Thank you for stopping by!

  22. Excellent list! I think we all think of the “surface” of items to clean but never really think of everything hiding below what we can see.Thumbs up for the post!

    1. Thank you so much! I agree, most people would be shocked at the little things that make such a big deal when you are cleaning. I always feel my home is so much cleaner when I get the hidden areas. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

  23. Great round up of tips. I’ve been feeling the itch to do some deep spring cleaning. So these are perfect!
