So, I have exciting news! My 15 month old learned the word “NO”.
To all my mommy friends out there, you know that I am being sarcastic when I said this was “exciting” news.
Not only does she say no, but she also shakes her head side to side while saying it! My husband and I were so excited when she first started doing this. We thought it was so cute, and such a big breakthrough for her. How foolish we were looking back on it now. Big mistake!
Now, not so much! She says no to everything, and has gotten to the point where she thinks it is funny! For the sake of privacy I will just call her “Baby”! So, here is a typical conversation with my 15 month old:
Mommy: “Baby, can mommy have a kiss?”
Baby: “NO” while shaking her head at me and laughing.
Daddy: “Baby, are you hungry?”
Baby: “NO” While shaking her head and fussing because she actually is hungry!
Mommy: “Let’s change your diaper.”
Baby: “No” While shaking her head and running away from me.
This “NO” business is getting really old, really fast! Next step, teach her to say YES!
We plan on saying “YES” to her for everything we possibly can. Also, when she laughs and thinks it’s is funny there has to be zero laughter on our part. We have also read that totally ignoring it is good. It might not be easy but its a must. Otherwise we are going to be facing a really big up hill battle.
As parents we have to try and not be too hard on ourselves but this seems like it should have been a pretty easy one. Has anyone else ever made this mistake? How did you get out of the “no” battle?
