This is a day where we should not only be celebrating with hot dogs and fireworks but we should also be discussing what this day truly means with our children. Most little ones do not realize the impact of what we celebrate on this day and how it affects them.
When children ask what Independence Day is about, explain that is it America’s Birthday! It is the day we officially became a country and no longer had to follow the rules of Britain. We, as a country, decided to come up with our own rules to follow. That is why we are able to publish news in papers (yes tell them about newspapers!) and online, speak out when we feel something is wrong, it is why we have freedom. Explain that it is a day to thank the brave men and women who fight for us to keep those rights and freedoms.
Teach them the songs you were taught as a young child. The Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America, You’re a Grand Ole Flag, even Yankee Doodle Dandy! It will give little ones a fun spin and help them understand why our country is so special, in a language everyone knows, music.
Create food for the occasion that is patriotic. Red, White and Blue Popsicles out of fresh pureed fruit. Jello is always a summer favorite. Create parfaits using vanilla yogurt, strawberries and blueberries. Or red, white and blue star shaped cookies are always a huge hit!
Help them create flags and explain what the symbols represent. Explain each star is a state and each line represents one of the original 13 colonies that were around in 1776, when we became a country. This can be a very fun arts and crafts project that can stay up all year long.
Most importantly spend quality time as a family and celebrate this great country we are lucky enough to be a part of. These days are special, so few and far in-between. Create the memories that will last a lifetime. And enjoy the FIREWORKS!!!!
