At the beginning of October I took the kids to Target. Low and behold, the aisle next to the Halloween section was CHRISTMAS. Nothing makes my heart happier than Christmas. Every year it seems it happens earlier and earlier. I absolutely love the holiday but it certainly steals the thunder when it’s the first of October and there are decorations being sold?!
Not to mention the amount of nagging, begging and bribery in exchange for that “all year” good behavior continuum for “Santa’s” Christmas list. However, I find this is the best time to get that shopping out of the way.
We do Christmas on a budget. Especially with three kids, one income and very busy schedules waiting until the last minute is not cost efficient nor is it effective time management. Every year we shoot for practicality. I like to aim for useful and educational or anything that provokes imagination. To me, those are the keys to happiness in life and giving those types of gifts just seem natural for us.
This year, the boys are getting a room makeover with their favorite Super Heroes. Batman and Spiderman will make their debuts Christmas morning in the newly renovated super hero bachelor pad. I also like to make sure the phase is worth the investment. If it lasts more than three months, it’s a keeper. Getting it out of the way is so much more affordable before the holiday prices make their way to a Target/ToysRUs or Walmart near you. So much is on clearance, too. SCORE!
This year I plan to participate in my very first Black Friday if I find a MUST HAVE item. The boys have been asking for a power wheels. As much as I would like for them to enjoy it… they are SO expensive. Putting a price on happiness DOES have its limit- at least in this house. If possible, that will be my one item I rush to the stores for at the butt crack of dawn.
Next week I will share my gift guide for my little men…just don’t tell them what they are getting!
How does the “early” Christmas season affect your feeling toward the season? What are your plans for gift giving? Do you set budgets?
