So you win some, and you lose some. We all don’t always get our way and learning this early trains us of its importance. Being active in something is not only rewarding but is a great teaching tool for children and young adults. It creates an outlet; physical exercise, healthy competition and a mentality of get knocked down but keep on trying.
I chose to start my oldest child in organized sports last spring. Honestly, I could have cared less what it was. He showed interest and I gave him the means, transportation and support in the stands. He chose baseball which is our entire families past time. At first the concept was hard. Taking turns in an organized fashion, learning to play well with others even when we may not have wanted to as well as listening. LISTENING is such an important characteristic NOBODY seems to do any longer. The big PLUS for us was that it didn’t involve electricity, anything that ended in –vision, -pad or-let. I am a huge advocate for dirt stains, sweat and scrapping a knee here and there. So, when my child said let’s play, we did just that.
This spring we are entering the world for futbol! Soccer was this gals favorite growing up. My oldest wanted to venture different pastures and my heart skipped a beat with excitement. I cannot wait for him to be involved (not to mention the energy exertion) and learn a new activity. The confidence boost (and possible lack thereof) is a platform for conversation and determination that I personally feel many in our current generation fail to thrive with. Everything is given with instant gratification and hard work is falling by the wayside. Whether it is karate, dance, soccer, baseball or a running club- being about something bigger than ourselves is something we as parents need to be a part of and involve our children in.
Go out, learn and teach something! Being involved has lessons for everyone in your family!!!
